$8M Uitvlugt robbery…Cops let suspects go after seizing loot

Their job is to catch the criminals and whenever possible, recover stolen loot. But some ranks of the Police Force’s Tactical Services Unit (TSU) are currently under close arrest as detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters probe the case of thieves stealing from thieves.
The ranks were detained yesterday as the investigations into last Sunday morning’s Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara robbery took an interesting twist.
They are accused of finding the perpetrators and letting them go after taking away a significant portion of the $8M loot.
Crime Chief Seelall Persaud yesterday confirmed that the ranks were detained “for action they would have taken after the robbery.”
Persaud did not elaborate. But he did indicate that the police have one of the robbery suspects in custody.
Early Sunday morning, a family at Ocean View, Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara, endured a one-hour ordeal of being tied up and gagged, as bandits ransacked their home, making off with $8M in cash and gold jewellery.
Kaieteur News understands that after the robbery, the police were provided with the licence number of the car and ranks of a mobile patrol observed the vehicle, a white Toyota Premio, abandoned at Vreed-en-Hoop.
Later Sunday, the police, who managed to ascertain the owner of the vehicle, swooped down in the Tucville area and arrested one of the suspects.
“He has given us a story,” Crime Chief Seelall Persaud told Kaieteur News yesterday.
But according to a source, several dissatisfied ranks of the TSU, went in search of the other two suspects and they soon found them in a house at Lodge.
But instead of arresting the men, the TSU ranks struck a deal, by allowing the suspects to go free in exchange for a portion of the booty – several million dollars in gold jewellery.
Word of their actions reached the ears of their superiors and an investigation was immediately launched.
This newspaper was told that the TSU ranks were arrested and taken to CID Headquarters, Eve Leary, while their homes were searched. Their cupboards in the TSU barrack rooms were also searched, but it is unclear if any of the loot was recovered.
This will not be the first time that something like this has been unearthed. On several occasions, police ranks were caught with the extorted proceeds obtained from criminal suspects.
In a few instances they were placed before the courts after they were caught in sting operations initiated by the very persons they apprehended.
