-Institution returns with 10 medals
By Juanita Hooper
University of Guyana (UG) student, Lawanda Whaul filched a gold medal in the under 20 female Discus when the ninth edition of the Barbados Relay Fair concluded under floodlights at the National Stadium, Waterford, St. Michael last Saturday.
Whaul being the only athlete to secure gold for UG, stated that this was her third international meet, and she was pleased with her throw of 29.96m which won the novel event, ahead of Springer Memorial’s Shekinah Tapping 28.92m.
Both UG male and female team missed their chances of standing on the medal podium in 4x100m (males), Swedish Medley (females) and 4x400m relays.
The males 4x100m had one of the most explosive starts from two time Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) gold medalist, Treiston Joseph on the first leg of the race. Joseph then furnished Kenneth ‘BC’ Semple’s (coach/athlete) left handed with the baton where he continued the race handing it to Owen Adonis who passed to Eon Campbell to end the 4x100m on the backstretch; Campbell was unfortunate to maintain the position his teammates handed the baton to him on the final 100 meters of the relay to cross the line in fourth position. The event was won in 42.95 seconds by Pacers Track Club of Barbados.
The females’ team, on the other hand, started the Swedish Medley, which comprised of one 100m, 200m, 300m and 400m in disappointment after learning that the race they initially registered for was cancelled; on registration for the relay the athletes signed up for (‘Medley Club/Institution’ (200x400x800x1200)) they were asked to produce the legs they were running and as a result could not have switched the legs for the Swedish Medley, which left Adacie Fanafair to run the 100m, Juanita Hooper for the 200m, Fiona Jones, 300m and Alexis Williams 400m.
Fanafair, who is known in her High School days for the 400m, ran a perfect first leg, handing baton to Hooper, last year IGG Long Jump gold medalist in 3rd position. Hooper then conducted her duties on the second leg handing the wand in second position, running a blistering 200m, to Jones who was unlucky to uphold the spot. Jones then relayed to Williams who tried to take her team to the podium but was unsuccessful; UG team finished fourth.
After missing the medal podium in the Swedish Medley earlier in the day, the girls (Hooper, Fanafair, Jones, and Carlene Waithe) made it their task to medal in the 4x100m. Hooper who surprised Christiansburg Wismar Secondary School (CWSS) coach, Moses Pantlitz, with her powerful leg in lane four which closed all stagers from lane 5-8, handing the baton in first to Fanafair who passed to Jones with Waithe at the end. Waithe surprised her team-mates after running neck to neck with two other females beating them to the punch with a massive dip at the finish line in a time of 54.38 seconds for third.
A mixed Guyana team which comprised of Tutorial High School’s physiotherapist, Alicia Fortune, Jevina Straker, Brandi Johnson and UG’s Alexis Williams claimed silver in the 4X800 Open behind Combermere School team. Straker cruised to a comfortable second behind Combermere School’s Akelila Knight.
The males came second in the Medley Club/Institution (200x400x800x1200) relays after a hard come back in the race, finishing in a time of 7:01.55 seconds; first place was claimed by Pacer Track Club in 6:46.41 seconds.
Barbados Queen’s College boys and girls team lighted up the stadium in the relays claiming four gold medals with the former and latter taking two apiece and also breaking three records; boys U13 1000m Sprint Medley Swedish ( 2:31.75), boys U13 4x100m ( 52.20) and girls U15 4x100m ( 51.17).
Bringing down the curtains at the elite sports were the 4x400m relay. UG again missed the podium in this event to end in fourth position in the male and female section.
The records for the Clubs/Institution, U20 boys and girls and U17 boys 4x400m were broken. New records are as follow: Clubs/Institution male 3:17.72, Clubs/Institution women 4:01.72, U20 boys 3:14.20, U20 girls 3:54.17, and U17 boys 3:26.32.
A new record was set in the girls U15 long jump by Ebhar Blackwood in a leap of 5.25m.
Meanwhile, CWSS medaled in the under 17 boys and girls 4x400m and also in the Medley boys. The team’s coach, Pantlitz, after the closing ceremony, stated that it was an excellent performance from the team with the time span they trained for, “We trained as a team from the second week in January”, he said.
