Dear Editor,
I observed that the government appointed IMC for cricket held stakeholders’ meetings over the weekend at various venues. I am perplexed that after much fanfare the IMC has failed to convince its most prominent members to participate. In fact, this IMC seem to be Mr. Lloyd alone having as his choir boys the Harper brothers and “Mr. Controversy” Bissoondyal Singh. One is left to ponder if Mr. Lloyd hiring by the Government, at an exorbitant cost to taxpayers, was solely intended to help Bissoondyal Singh gain control of the GCB. It appears that no amount of arm twisting has convinced Mr. Luckhoo, Norman McLean, Tony Xavier and others to join this masquerade.
The public is well aware that you cannot buy a crowd and win at the polls as the PPP/C realised during the last general elections campaign. Your message has to be convincing and people will follow. I witnessed the futile efforts to recruit a crowd for the meeting at Uitvlugt even though free food was provided by the Sports Ministry bus.
At Uitvlugt and Providence Lloyd was bombarded with questions that clearly indicate government can only be held culpable for the state of our playing facilities yet this was not reported in the state media.
Only the blind and deaf would not realise that the state of our cricket is primarily due to the government controlled NDC grounds being in a state of disrepair. Mr. Lloyd heard this at every one of his meetings. The Government should have used the money they are paying him to repair the NDC facilities and that would have helped our communities and sports in general.
Mr. Lloyd can continue to bury his head in the sand and when he takes it out ask the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports to Audit the spending that occurred at the Aquatic Centre that has not met international requirements. I do not know but I was reliably informed the cost was in the vicinity of One Billion Guyana Dollars. Please tell me I am wrong.
Mr. Lloyd, after all, it is
about the money!!!
