Competition in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), National Super League sponsored by CONCACAF under its Win in CONCACAF with CONCACAF FIFA funded initiative kicked off on the weekend with preliminary round matches at two venues.
Host team Millballers were edged by West Demerara’s Den Amstel at the Bartica Community Centre Ground by the odd goal in three. Netting the double for Den Amstel was Andre Hector in the 30th and 67th (penalty) minute while for Millballers, veteran Whitney Welcome hit the target in the 59th minute.
Over at the BV Triumph Ground, Berbice’ New Amsterdam United brushed aside East Bank’s Grove Hi Tech 3-1; Colin Bowery (39), Sherlund Edwards (56) and Adrian Adams in the 63rd minute were the player on target for the winners. Grove’s consolation goal came off the boot of Domini Garnett in the 71st minute.
In the other game at this venue, Amelia’s Ward United edged out Bakewell Buxton Stars 2-1. The Linden based Amelia’s Ward sealed the game in a 5 minute span with veteran Travis Waterton rocking the nets in the 20th and Jermaine Batson four minutes later. Pulling one back for Bakewell Buxton Stars was Kevon Barry in the 66th minute.
Matches are set to continue this Sunday with three more games. At the Bartica Community Centre Ground, Millballers will entertain Grove Hi Tech from 19:00hrs.
At the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden, Amelia’s Ward United will come up against Bakewell Buxton Stars in the curtain raiser at 19:00hrs.
A draw for Amelia’s Ward will earn them a place in the Super League main draw. Bakewell Buxton Stars will have to win by 2 clear goals to qualify, a win by a 1 goal margin by Buxton will push the game into extra time and penalty shootout if necessary.
At the Den Amstel Ground on the West Coast of Demerara, New Amsterdam United and the home team, Den Amstel, will do battle in a match that can very well see the winner of the Group emerging.
Victory for either team will take them to 6 points with a game in hand; a draw in their final game will still see them earning a place in the 2012 Super League main draw.
