Two bandits attacked and robbed a Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo businessman and
his family of $7M in valuables, before fleeing in a waiting car yesterday.
Reports reveal that around 11:15 hrs, two men were seen circling the area before the robbery occurred. The proprietor, his wife and son were beaten before being gagged and tied up in their kitchen. Before fleeing, the bandits, one of whom was armed with a handgun, carted off $5M in jewelry and $2M in cash. A quantity of cell phone cards was also taken away by the men who escaped in a waiting motor car.
The businessman, Harold Ramroop, who operates “Harold’s Shop,” said that he was mopping the entrance to his business premises when a man walked up behind him and placed a gun to his head.
“He put me to lie down on the ground. He then shut the door and ask me who deh home. I tell he my wife and my son home, and he tell me to call for them. When they come and they see, he tell them open the grill door or else he gon shoot me.”
With the door closed no one outside could have seen what was taking place in the shop. Ramroop said the bandit then gun butted his son and ordered him to lie on the floor while his wife was taken upstairs to hand over all the cash and jewelry.
He continued: “I told them I would comply with whatever they say, but don’t kill anybody. When they come down back the stairs with my wife they tied her up in the kitchen. Then they took my son and then me in the kitchen where they tied our hands, feet, and bandaged our mouth with tape from the shop.”
The traumatized man explained that immediately after the two bandits returned downstairs, “one of the bandits said that we talking lie and it got more money, and my wife told them that it got more money in the drawer and they search the drawer and found some cash that we had to pay for stocks. They then walked out where they came from, and were gone.”
The man’s son managed to free himself, then his mother and father. A phone call was then made to the police. They visited the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was treated for a wound to the head which resulted from a gun-butt. Miss Ramroop was too traumatized to speak.
The police visited the scene, “Harold’s Shop,” and statements were taken while fingerprint specials dusted the area for clues.
At the shop, relatives, family members and concerned neighbours quickly gathered at the scene to lend support to the traumatized victims.
According to residents in the area, the bandits had been seen in the area previously, and might have been observing the business entity before making a move to rob the proprietor.
“Perhaps they might have come in and buy and look around, and notice what going on before they attack,” one of the residents reasoned.
Ramroop said that he has been in business for the past 18 years and had never experienced a robbery as was carried out on his premises yesterday.
