From a total of 21 contenders, the annual Mashramani calypso competition is down to 13 following the semi-finals last Saturday at Wales, West Bank Demerara.
It was an enthusiastic crowd that spurred on the singers who belted out their lyrics for some six hours. Their lyrics ranged from the humorous to the serious political commentary. By the time the show was over, eight had been eliminated.
The finalists slated to perform at Thirst Park this Friday evening are Derrick Mangal (Bright Colours), Esther Sampson (Calypso Stella), Manoel Ferreira (King Perai), John Marcus (Ras Marcus), Tenneisha DeFreitas (Junior Calypso queen), Malcolm Corrica (Lord Canary), Garfield Campbell (Roots), Roger Hings (Young Bill Rogers), Martin Byrne (Mighty Voter), Kenny Fraser (Mighty Believer), Dawn Edwards (Lady D) and Karen Benneth (Queen Makeba).
