Some residents of Dahlia Street, Wismar, have expressed concern over the deplorable state of this thoroughfare, which was recently rehabilitated.
Instead of easier ingress and egress, for some this street has become a nightmare.
The Street, which previously had followed a straight line, was diverted to the left, and presently ends at a resident’s gate.
Beyond the detour is a drain which was dug across the road, but no bridge was erected for persons to cross. Water, from a nearby creek, flows across the road, washing away the soil in the process.
A woman, who owns a shop nearby is fearful that the water will wash away the foundation of the shop. Already there is evidence of erosion in front of the structure.
Senior citizen Stanley Kellman is most perturbed.
“When they started to do this road, everybody was happy, but then they burst the road and diverted the water across the road, and they ain’t even put a bridge for people to walk over. Now I got to swim, because the water coming from the creek at the back and flowing over the road. For I to get out, when I have to go and see the doctor, neighbours have to lift me out, because I had a stroke and I can’t walk properly. This thing getting worse every day, I don’t know what they do- why they divert this creek. Right now the water that flowing over the road eroding the place, and people have to skip and jump to escape the water, especially when it raining,” Kellman lamented.
Another resident reiterated what Stanley said and was adamant that there was no reason to divert the water, which originally flowed into the drain on the other side of the road.
The resident explained that if it was inevitable for the diversion, a culvert should have been placed across the road.
“I think they only made things worse, because right now all the senior citizens living beyond this point are finding it difficult to cross the drain, because there is always water flowing and the two pieces of wood to walk on is totally inadequate.”
Residents are concerned that senior citizens could fall into the water and injure themselves.
Kaieteur news understands that when queries were made as to why no culvert was erected to accommodate the flow of water, the excuse was that there was no money to do so.
Roadways and alleyways on the Wismar flats are especially susceptible to erosion, given the onslaught of water that rushes down from the nearby hills whenever it rains.
But residents have contended that the creek in the vicinity of Dahlia Street never posed a problem before.
“It was after they put this drain across the road- for what only God knows; and now they claiming that they don’t have money for a bridge or culvert. If they know they didn’t have the money, why divert the water-why not let the water from the creek flow in the drain it was always flowing?” was the popular refrain.
The residents are demanding that the persons who were tasked with rehabilitating Dahlia Street return and finish the job, because as far as they are concerned, this particular roadway is far from complete.
