The Mothers’ Union in the Diocese of Guyana held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) yesterday at the St George’s Cathedral at which June Enpcage Morgan was elected President.
The previous President was Sheran Harper. The Mother’s Union is a worldwide organization with its headquarters in London.
Mothers’ Union has been operational in Guyana since 1926, and today, is involved in community outreach across the country – from the urban centre in Georgetown to the most isolated of communities in the rainforest interior.
Activities include women’s empowerment programmes, income generating projects, school and senior citizens’ feeding programmes, educational programmes, prison work, hospital visiting and programmes designed to nurture young people.
In 2009, Mothers’ Union Guyana won the Rotary Vocational Service Award in recognition of their efforts to promote stable family life.
They were also recognised by the Inner Wheel Club of Georgetown for their work in nurturing young children and assisting single parents through their two Daycare centres in Georgetown.
One of the newest initiatives in the capital is the Mobile Food Unit, an income generating project which provides jobs for local women. The profits of the enterprise go to support the Mothers’ Union parenting groups and other projects in depressed communities.
Members in Guyana are involved in the worldwide parenting programme and trainers of facilitators from Guyana now travel across the world to share training expertise with members in other countries. In Guyana, the programme has been successfully extended to the Amerindian communities, with training materials being developed in local languages to train people to run parenting groups in their own areas. The programme has now been extended into post-parenting projects which help parents earn additional income to support their families.
