With Banks DIH Ltd in full support, this year’s NaMilCo Football Festival which
opens today with a double header at the Tucville ground is expected to provide better and more efficient lights through the munificence of the local beverage giants, who plugged in excess of $1million towards the essential component.
Yesterday, during a simple ceremony conducted at the Fruta Conquerors FC Headquarters in Tucville, Outdoor Events Manager Mortimer Stewart handed over the items that included 1500 watts halogen lamps and sheds for the teams to President of the club Marlan Cole, who accepted the gift on behalf of the organization.
Stewart, whose Company has been a robust supporter of the development of sports across the country said it was all part of their intended policy to assist sports organizations as well as their strict adherence to the mandate of being a model corporate entity.
The main sponsor of local football, Banks DIH according to Stewart intends to increase its presence in the sport and even though reluctant to divulge much more promised that fans, footballers and supporters of sport will definitely witness a more proactive approach by the Company this year and the future.
“We know how important our role is in assisting in the development of sport locally and we intend to fulfill that role,” Stewart stated.
Cole, whose club is the organizer of the tournament thanked Banks DIH on behalf of the club, adding that they will do everything in their power to ensure that the lights serves its purpose and that the competition is organized to the approval of all its sponsors.
Meanwhile, action in the competition starts at 18:00 hrs with University of Guyana taking on Sunburst Camptown and that will be followed by the clash between Northern Rangers and Beacons at 20:00 hrs.
In the opening game, UG has shown admirable improvement since returning to competition and even though Camptown are a seasoned and experienced side, they would be advised not to underestimate the academic unit.
For UG, Nigel Garraway is anticipated to lead their attack with support from Maurice Cummings, while Camptown’s quest for victory will be led by Troy Prescod, Nigel Codrington, Reshawn Sandiford and Orlando Gilgeous.
Beacons are a very strong unit and they will have to rely on the performances of Phillip Rowley, Dillion Fraser, Paul Giles, Sherwin Grimes, Jerome Richardson and Eon Singh to get past a determined Northern Rangers that have shown maturity since coming into the big leagues.
Nicholas and Anthony Sancho had good showings last year and they should once again be the leading duo for the Kitty-based side.
The competition is set for a riveting start.
