The dangers of using one’s position to fulfill personal sexual satisfaction

Dear Editor,
They say that knowledge is power, and, that a little knowledge can be dangerous. They say also that those who play with fire are bound to get burnt .These maxims, if I may call them that belong to the secular realm of thought but may be best understood from a religious perspective. One Bible dictionary defines knowledge as: “the truth or facts of life that a person acquires either through experience or thought”. The same dictionary defines Wisdom as “the ability to judge correctly and to follow the best course of action, based on knowledge and understanding”.
I have chosen to define wisdom immediately after knowledge, because it is a fact of life that many of us may acquire admirable knowledge and qualifications but exhibit very little wisdom in the decisions we make on a daily basis.
Indeed, it is written at Proverbs 24:5 that:
“Wisdom has great power, and a man of knowledge increases strength”.
Note that both knowledge and wisdom are included in this verse.
One interpretation of this verse is as follows: Even thought a person may be highly qualified and possesses outstanding knowledge, if they are lacking in wisdom, the decisions they make may be catastrophic. In fact, I would respectfully submit that many personal decisions are made in the absence of knowledge and without wisdom hence our slow progress or no progress at all in life.
While some of us are not blessed with wisdom and would not consciously seek to make the best possible decisions, some of us blatantly chose to ignore knowledge and behave carelessly and recklessly to our own peril.
I make this submission against the backdrop of the numerous sex scandals which have plagued the economic, political and religious environments at the national and international levels. One web site has listed forty such scandals during the past twenty two years. For example;
(i) Anita Hill accused US Supreme Court nominee of inappropriate sexual behavior. His career was almost destroyed.
(ii) Paul Wolfowitz, president of the World Bank forced to resign after being implicated in a sexual relationship
(iii) Strauss Kahn French Presidential candidate embroiled in sex scandal
(iv) Herman Cain Republican presidential candidate withdrew his nomination after being accused of sexual harassment.
These are just a few of the reported scandals at the international level and they have all resulted in severe damage of or a complete destruction of the careers of individuals.
At the religious level, sex scandals have been plaguing the Catholic fraternity for decades, and when all of the available facts are examined, they almost always reveal that the decisions to become involved are made in the absence of wisdom.
Whether it is through the occupation of a political, official or religious office, there is definitely too much sex scandal in the world today. Not that there is a comfortable of a scandal of any sort, but the frequency of those revelations is quite worrying.
My awareness of the seriousness of sex scandals was awakened by the Anita Hill and Clearance Thomas affair which led me to the reading of a text titled Taking Care of Business. Chapter Thirteen of that book is titled ‘Playing with Fire: Sex in the Office’.
The essence of that chapter is that it is a dangerous thing for anyone to use their office or position for the fulfillment of their personal sexual satisfaction.
The author surmised that to do so is to play with fire because it can and do lead to the destruction of one’s career and by extension their family life. Indeed, there is much evidence of this today.
In other words, based on the number of sex scandals being reported by our local media these days, I am led to believe that too many persons have been playing with fire.
Ironically, some people having been burnt the first time would use both knowledge and wisdom to avoid a repetition. However, there are others who are so determined to perpetuate their sinful ways that they allow themselves to be completely consumed by the raging flames.
My simple advice to anyone who may be contemplating having sex in the office is for them to use knowledge and wisdom and be reminded that they might just be playing with fire which can result in fourth and fifth degree burns.
