With the participation of 16 schools -14 public and two private schools- the
Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, is sponsoring the inter-schools “Know Your Stuff” literature competition. The meet now heads into the quarter-finals stage of the competition.
The contest which started earlier this year is the brainchild of GT&T’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Yog Mahadeo who became enthused to do more in the field of education after the Spelling Bee competition. It was devised for the purpose of better equipping fifth form students for success at their upcoming CSEC examinations in English B. In the future, there may be competitions in Mathematics, Science and other subject areas.
Since the start of the contest, the schools vying have been faced with two categories of contemporary or Shakespeare plays, and have been going head to head on the particular class texts used to teach the subject.
Guyenterprise, which is the co-ordinating agency, said that the competition will encourage students to become fully familiar with their English B texts and general aspects of the syllabus. This, they said, would boost the students’ performance and could ensure better results at the exam.
It was also said that in this subject it calls for attentive and keen listening skills. Students may gain more insights into what they are learning and this will give them a better chance at earning favourable results at the conclusion of their exams.
The students have two plays, two novels, ten short stories and 20 poems to choose from. All of these are included in the school syllabus. The programmes are produced by Guyenterprise and are being pre-recorded at a selected venue in Georgetown.
The contest is also being aired during this month. The airings will be on NCN on Mondays and Fridays at 6.30 p.m. and rebroadcast on Saturdays and Sundays at 10.00 a.m.
Listeners and viewers will also have an opportunity to win prizes as they will be given a chance to text in answers to multiple choice questions before the end of the programme. Great gifts are up for grabs.
At every stage of the competition, students and schools will receive token gifts from the sponsors. The GTT Know your Stuff shield will be awarded each year, with a replica given to each year’s winner.
