Dear Editor,
I applaud Guyanese American Pam Jackman-Brown for her noteworthy achievements in being elected as a judge and being promoted to a higher bench as well as for her various lectures on important judicial issues that impact on minorities.
As a fellow Berbician and Guyanese, I am proud of her contributions in the field of jurisprudence.
Jackman-Brown was elected to Queens Civil Court in 2009 for a nine year term and was sworn in as a Civil Judge in January 2010. She became the only Guyanese American to be elected to a Judgeship and is among a few women to be elected to Judicial office. Last year she got an appointment to the Supreme Court to fill a vacancy and she grabbed the offer giving up her elected Civil Court position. She will preside over criminal matters in Queens Supreme Court of the 11 District.
Jackman-Brown is a product of public university. She attended Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) as a part time student completing an Associate Degree in 1979. Then she transferred to John Jay College where she graduated ‘magna cum laude’ (Honors) in 1983. She attended Queens College Law School graduating in 1986 with her Law degree. She was admitted to the NY bar in 1987. She worked with the Legal Aid Society in Brooklyn.
She worked as a law clerk for a judge in Brooklyn and as an arbitrator on small claims cases. She also worked at the NYS Unified Court System as a Law Assistant, 1992 to 1998; Unified Court System, Court Attorney, 1989 to 1991; and the Legal Aid Society, Criminal Division, Trial Attorney, 1986 to 1989. She eventually rose to the position of Judge in the Housing Court Bench.
She was appointed by Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman, for a first term, 1998 to 2002 and a second term from 2003 to 2008 She worked in Queens County from 1998 until 2005 after which she went to Manhattan.
In 2009 Jackman-Browne was elected to the Civil Court. In 2010 she was appointed to act as a Judge in the Supreme Court in Queens assigned to the Civil Division, Matrimonial Part. Last November she was asked to serve as a Supreme Court Judge for Queens on criminal matters for a 14 year term leading to her swearing in last week.
During her legal career, Jackman-Brown gave several lectures about justice and about the economy’s impact on the family structure, the rise of domestic disputes, and justice for minorities.
Congrats Judge! Continue your rise and make us even more proud!
