‘Big Truck’ promises to remove brakes and roll over ‘The Sniper’

Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite is driving into Guyana from his Brooklyn NY base on February 22 for his Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) championship bout with Barbadian Shawn ‘The Sniper’ Cox four days later and the former WBC cruiserweight champion has warned that he would be removing the brakes apparatus from his vehicle.
Kaieteur Sport caught up with the former world champion shortly after he had completed a rigorous road work session yesterday morning and he said that he has never felt better for a fight. Braithwaite said that he is operating out of the Gleason’s Gym in downtown Brooklyn under the stewardship of former professional pugilist, Dillon Carew and he has already completed several grueling rounds of sparring with notable fighters in the gym.
Braithwaite admitted that he has never seen Cox in action but has heard quite a lot of his prowess.  “I heard that the chap is talking a lot but I will not fall into the trap of insecurity,” proclaimed Braithwaite. He visualizes a good fight but other than spouting confidence of a victory, refrained from making a prediction.
Braithwaite said that he has received a missive from the Barbadian describing what he would do to him (Braithwaite). “But talk is cheap so I will not dignify his hogwash with a response,” retorted Braithwaite.
Braithwaite, a Plaisance resident, has risen to fame after knocking out Italian, Vincenzo Cantatore for the cruiserweight version of the WBC title. To date, he has chalked up 28 wins, 20 of them coming via the knockout route. He has surrendered 4 decisions including a loss to Guillermo Jones in a hard fought title defense some years ago. He admits that the loss has been a setback but has rebounded with a knockout victory over American Adam Harris late last year. Since then Braithwaite had endured many disappointments because of aborted fights the most recent being in Russia. Nevertheless, he had capitalized on the Russian trip, acting as sparring partner to Dennis Levedev who subsequently defeated former world champion, James Toney in an interim battle for the WBC championship.
Braithwaite is spouting confidence and said that Cox is not in the category of the fighters to whom he lost. “So if he thinks I am a walk over I have something good for him,” said ‘Big Truck.’
He did make other promises, all pointing to Cox’ destruction but epithets that will not pass the editor’s deleting pen. “I would just like to urge my many fans to come out since this will be a special night in the Sports Hall, Braithwaite concluded.
Cox chose the sobriquet ‘the Sniper’ and indeed most of his victims have fallen prey to his precision punches. Anthony Augustin, Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes and more recently, Kurt Bess could all attest to his numbing power. Cox’s last bout in Guyana, a first round shutdown of local light/heavyweight and cruiserweight champion Kurt Bess, was an attestation of his power. The Bess beating was so severe that the Guyanese pugilist had to be transported to the Davis Memorial Hospital for a cursory check by medical practitioners. Unbelievably, the Bajan need a mere 210sec to destroy his man. This time around, he will be up against a fighter of immense experience and will also match his punching power. While the betting boys will want to capitalize on any valuable tips before casting their wagers, the only definitive prediction that one could reasonably make is that this fight will not last the distance.
Several other CABOFE titles would be at stake as the organizers hustle to fill the various weight divisions to pave the way for local pugilists to battle for honours in the World Boxing Council’s Caribbean Cup Championships set to commence later this year.
In the main preliminary, Edmond Declou battles Trinidadian Kevin Placide for the CABOFE middleweight belt while Orland Rogers and Dexter Marques will go head to head for the bantamweight version of that title.   Barbadian, Miguel Antoine will also oppose Guyanese Revlon Lake for the super/lightweight title while Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry defends his bantamweight CABOFE title against Bajan Selwyn Lett.
Admission price is $3000 for ringside and $1500 for stands. The fights will be broadcast for later viewing.
