Parents of a teen found dead in a mining camp in Region Eight fear he was killed, but say they are being
pushed around by the police.
Dead is Nimrod Williams. He was 19-years-old.
Williams lived in a small settlement just outside the Patamuna Village of Paramakatoi in the Pakaraima Mountains.
He left his parent’s home in September, 2011 to go to work at a mining camp in the Mahdia mining district.
The boy’s father, Nixon Williams, told Kaieteur News that on October 24, he received a call from a woman at the mining camp informing him that his son had died by drowning.
Mr. Williams informed his wife, Jocell, and the two made the two-mile walk to Central Paramakatoi to get a flight to Mahdia. A businessman kindly allowed them on his chartered flight.
When they got to Mahdia, the couple went in search of the mining camp where their son worked, but on the way, they discovered a group of persons bringing his body out. The parents told Kaieteur News that their son’s naked body was tied to a pole and was being fetched out to Central Mahdia. The parents said that there were marks of violence about his face, which was “black and blue.”
From Mahdia, the body was brought to Georgetown for a post mortem. The pathologist gave the cause of death as asphyxia (drowning).
The parents have been pleading with Mahdia Police for a proper investigation to be done, including interviewing another person who was with their son at the time of his death.
Mr. and Mrs. Williams have been in Georgetown for about a month now. They visited Police Headquarters three times to solicit movement on the investigation, but have been told that Mahdia ranks are dealing with the matter.
However, the Williams’ say the Mahdia police once told them that they did not have time to deal with the issue because they had other matters to deal with.
“Right now I don’t have money to go back home, but I want to clarify this matter before I go,” Mrs. Williams told Kaieteur News.
The Williams are pleading with the relevant authorities to see that a proper investigation is carried out and that they get justice.
