A Kamarang man was placed on $200,000 bail after being charged for allegedly shooting his brother –in-law in the leg after the victim tried to rescue his sister from an alleged beating.
Osai Capelle was read two charges by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry which stated that he, on February 7, while at Jawalla Village located in upper Mazaruni, discharged a loaded gun with intent to maim, disfigure or disable Aaron Hunter. Capelle was also told that he, on the same date with intent to maim, disfigure or disable Hunter, inflicted grievous bodily harm to the said victim.
The prosecution said that Hunter’s sister is the reputed wife of the defendant. On the day in question, the victim allegedly heard his sister being beaten by her husband and went over to the house to render assistance. The police said that Capelle became annoyed and shot Hunter in the knee.
He was subsequently taken to the Kamarang Hospital and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Capelle was represented by Defence Lawyer Neil Boston who made an application for bail after divulging a completely different version of the events. The lawyer said that the only truth in the story was that the victim was shot, that Hunter is the brother of Capelle’s wife and that the victim went to the hospital. He said the correction is that Hunter shot himself. According to Boston, Capelle has been involved in a common law relationship with the victim’s sister and their union produced one child.
The lawyer said that the woman’s family wants a free ride from the defendant who has a variety of businesses and performs various trades. However, Capelle’s wife would not give her family money unless she consulted her husband. This annoyed them and as such they conspired against him.
The lawyer closed his submission by saying that the victim was out of harm’s way, his client was not a flight risk and at no time would the defendant seek to interfere with the course of justice.
The prosecution, after learning that Hunter was in a stable condition, did not deny the defendant his pre-trial liberty but asked that bail be granted in a substantial amount.
The court ordered Capelle to pay $100,000 bail for each of the charges. His next appearance is scheduled for March 19 at the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court.
