Edmond DeClou is currently preparing for the most lucrative and arguably the toughest fight of his career when he opposes Trinidadian, Kevin Placide for the Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) title on a special card promoted by the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Saturday February 26.
A resident of Linden, DeClou admits that there is a paucity of credible sparring partners in the Mining Town and has wisely switched camps to the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis boxing gym where such resources are readily available.
Last Thursday afternoon, the lanky fighter engaged in seven tough rounds with top amateur boxers, Bert Braithwaite and Eon Bancroft. Both fighters weigh less than DeClou but coach of the Lindener, Lennox ‘Cappel’ Daniels explained that the two amateurs are useful for speed. He said that the strategy he is employing necessitates speed and the two amateur pugilists are just the right choice to achieve his objective. Yesterday afternoon, DeClou rested from sparring but was not spared from rigorous, physical work.
Daniels explained that as fight night approaches he will bring in the more experienced sparring partners to test his charge’s fitness level. “Edmond has special talent and has a far way to go once he applies himself,” said Daniels.
Indeed, DeClou’s application to his task endorsed his coach’s belief; he appeared tired upon completion of sparring sessions but diligently attacked the heavy punching bag for several rounds before engaging in a similar amount several rounds on the speed ball. Daniels then instructed DeClou to engage in leg building exercises by sprinting up the flight of stairs for several minutes. Another couple of rounds bouncing on the big tire, meant to build leg muscles, complimented by rigorous calisthenics and DeClou was told to call it a day.
“While the money is important I want to make it clear that my primary objective is to win this bout,” exhorted DeClou. He said that he has been keeping tabs on Placide and is aware that the Trinidadian had been knocked out by Eastman while he (DeClou) had easily defeated the former European champ.
“I am now fighting under the sobriquet ‘Wonder Boy’ and will be out to teach Placid a boxing lesson,” said the lanky Lindener. He further promised to employ every necessary tactic to win the bout.
Should DeClou win this fight he will graduate into the prestigious World Boxing Council (WBC) Cup Caribbean Championships that also involves fighters from several other confederations battling for hundreds of thousands US dollars as well as lucrative world ratings.
In all, five Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) titles will be at stake as Guyanese fighters attempt to cash in on the lucrative offer.
In the main bout, Barbadian Shawn Cox will oppose former WBC cruiserweight champion, Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite in what will be the battle of the strongmen while USA based Guyanese and CABOFE bantamweight champion, Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry will defend his title against Barbadian Selwyn Lett in another eagerly anticipated 12 rounds scorcher.
As if that is not enough action for one night, Barbadian based Guyanese, Revlon Lake will go after Barbadian, Miguel Antoine for the CABOFE super lightweight belt. More action will follow when Orland Rogers tackles his fellow Guyanese, Dexter Marques.
The price of admission is $3000 for ringside and half that amount for the stands. Activities will not be televised live.
