Former West Indies Captain, Clive Lloyd, is the Chairman of the IMC and is expected to lead the discussions. Government formed the IMC after many problems arose in local cricket. These saw several factions jockeying for control of the entity.
Ramsey Ali was elected as the Guyana Cricket Board president, but met opposition from several rival quarters and faced a number of court actions filed. The election process was also questioned.
One court action resulted in Chief Justice Ian Chang issuing a ruling in which he recommended that government oversee and sort out the problems. The result was that Government set up the IMC.
This move has been met with stiff opposition from the WICB and condemnation from the ICC, the sports’ governing body. The WICB has removed several international matches from Guyana as a result of the impasse, enforcing its recognition of the GCB as the sole body administering cricket here and stated that the government IMC must be an advisory body.
This has been rejected by government.
Government has expressed determination to fix the problems affecting the sport. It says that it is not taking control of the local cricket administration. The GCB, the WICB and the ICC say that it has. Given the opposition from the regional body and the ICC, Guyana risks being banned from the sport if it insists on the IMC being the cricket administrator.
In the absence of a concrete sports policy ratified by the Parliament, which would have ruled on a course of action in the case of these kinds of disputes by law, the government will now take its case to the general public, who have given mixed reaction to the issue so far.
