Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, has called for renewed attention to the free movement of artists, cultural workers and sportspersons in the CARICOM Region; ensuring hassle-free travel and involving them in the promotion of integration, identity and wealth creation.
Dr. Anthony, who is also the Chairman of CARICOM Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD), made those remarks at the opening ceremony of the 22nd Meeting of COHSOD recently held at the CARICOM Secretariat, Liliendaal.
Under the theme, “Culture, Youth and Sport: Strategic repositioning for human and economic development,” he asserted that CARICOM countries need to increase their efforts to realize the potential benefits for the artistic community within the Region.
Dr. Anthony emphasized that one of the new items on the Council’s agenda is the development of a Regional Sports Tourism Strategy. He added that discussions would ascertain how the Council could leverage an area of competitive advantage for the Region, upgrade, as well as make better use of sports infrastructure and generate income for countries.
“We need renewed commitment to follow-up on the recommendations of the CARICOM Commission on Youth Development and Declaration of Paramaribo on the Future of Youth in the Caribbean Community, made in January 2010 in Suriname,” he said.
Dr. Anthony stressed that youths need to be treated as invaluable assets and important partners in national and regional development and they should be fully integrated in the work of the Caribbean Community.
While Dr. Anthony pointed out some destructive social behaviour patterns youths are involved in and noted that the Council would address them during this two-day session, he also mentioned the creation of healthy lifestyles for youths.
He suggested that leaders should ensure that physical education and sport are compulsory in the school curriculum, so that the rising tide of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases in the region could be stemmed.
Again he noted that there needs to be a renewed commitment to implementing the new model for CARIFESTA, to ensure that the Festival meets the expectations of both artists and Caribbean audiences, and serves as an important platform for developing vibrant cultural and creative industries.
