Relatives of 33-year-old Damodar Khemraj yesterday helped police identify his body, which washed
ashore at Perseverance Beach. His body is the third from the ill-fated rescue boat to be found.
The remains were identified by Rafeek Khan, the fisherman and boat owner to whose assistance the victims were going when their vessel capsized.
Khan said that he recognized Khemraj’s remains by his clothing.
The decomposing remains were found by Deonarine Deochand, a villager. He was walking on the beach when he noticed two carrion crows flying unusually low. Deochand said as he looked towards where the birds were heading, he observed the body. Khemraj, called ‘Rackoo’, is a taxi driver from Strathspey, East Coast Demerara.
Also confirmed dead are Kumar Marine of Strathspey, East Coast Demerara, whose body washed up at Hampton Beach, Essequibo, on Monday and 38-year-old Richard Smith, whose remains were found on Wednesday at Devonshire Castle foreshore on the Essequibo Coast.
Autopsies performed Thursday on Smith and Narine revealed that they died from drowning.
Still missing and feared dead is Shafeek Khan, called ‘Baby’, who is also from Strathspey. The lone survivor is Ganeshwar Reddy, who said he drifted in the water for several hours while clinging to a five-gallon bottle of gasoline.
The five men had ventured to the Essequibo Coast last week Saturday with the intention of taking a boat engine and fuel to Rafeek Khan and his crew, who were attacked and robbed by pirates.
But the rescue boat capsized in rough waters some 12 miles off Suddie.
Fifteen fishermen were attacked and robbed between Friday, February 3 and Saturday, February 4, off the Coast of the Pomeroon River.
Fishermen who have not ventured out to sea are asking for the resuscitation of the Cooperative Society in Region Two and to be protected by the Coast Guard and police.
Lieutenant Commander Orin Porter has reassured fishermen that within two months time a floating base that was constructed for the Pomeroon River will become operable.
Porter added that two additional boats will also ply the Pomeroon River.
