Dear Editor,
Guyana is the only English-speaking country in the South American mainland. This presents the country to be an important link between the mainland countries and North America and the rest of the English speaking Caribbean.
Perhaps more significant is the fact that Guyana shares borders with Brazil, the sixth largest economy in the world. Brazil only recently overtook India as the sixth largest economy which speaks to the enormous strides that country has made over the past decade or so.
This rising economic status has with it enormous potential benefits in terms of trade and commerce. The construction of the Takatu Bridge and the proposed construction of an all weather road from Lethem to Linden could have a transformative effect on the economic and cultural life of the two neighbouring countries.
Guyana’s future is inextricably linked with its continental destiny. As the saying goes “one can live without one’s friends but not without one’s neighbours.” Guyana is blessed to have a neighbour of the size and status as Brazil which is making waves in the international arena not only in respect to global trade and commerce but in the field of sports and culture as well.
