Bartica centenarian Elma Adams passed away at around 1:30 yesterday morning at the Medical Arts Centre in Georgetown at the age of 102. The woman, who was born on December 30, 1909, had also observed her 100th birth anniversary at the same medical institution.
Born in Georgetown, Adams moved to Bartica when she married at the age of 22.
She taught Home Economics during her stay there with her husband Joseph Adams. She had no biological children, but according to relatives, she adopted all of her nieces and nephews. Being very fond of children, and very interested in education, the woman and her husband later founded the Bartica Foundation School.
Relatives of Adams said that her home was the warmest place to visit, not in temperature, but in love.
Everyone would gather around her because of her alluring affectionate nature. Adams left Bartica after her husband died in 1978, and moved back to Georgetown. She outlived seven other siblings. Adams had spent the last three years of her life at the Medical Arts centre, and will be dearly remembered and missed by those who would’ve known her.
