The body of a second seaman from the ill-fated rescue boat has been recovered and the police-backed
search party has virtually given up hope of finding the other two men alive.
Police said that the decomposing body of 38-year-old Richard Smith washed ashore at around 04:00 hrs yesterday at Devonshire Castle foreshore on the Essequibo Coast.
Smith’s sister, Wendy De Roche, visited that Region two coast and positively identified her brother’s remains, which was taken to the Suddie Hospital Mortuary.
Smith was employed by Calford King who owned the boat that was going to assist a group of fishermen that was attacked by pirates between Friday and Saturday in one of the worst incidents in recent times.
His remains were found just a day after the body of Kumar Narine’s washed ashore at Hampton Beach, Essequibo.
Still missing are Shafeek Khan, called ‘Baby’ and Damodar Khemraj, of Strathspey, East Coast Demerara.
Ganeshwar Reddy, called ‘Smallie,’ the lone survivor, was rescued on Sunday, after clinging for several hours to a five-gallon gasoline drum. The men were taking a 48 horse power engine and five gallons of gasoline to the victims of the pirate attack when their vessel encountered rough waters and overturned.
Government has since announced increased patrols and plans to recall the army’s old 412 chopper to
help improve security for fishermen.
