According to statistics released by the Guyana Police Force, there has been a 65 % decrease in murders for January of this year as compared to the same period last year.
Last year, a total of 17 murders were recorded in comparison to six for the same period this year. Of the six murders, two were of the disorderly type, one was domestic related, while the other three are so far unknown.
For robbery under arms there has been a 4% increase for this year with 74 reports compared to 53 during January 2011. The statistics indicate an increase of 11% in the number of armed robberies involving the use of firearms, and a 113% increase in armed robberies where instruments other than firearms were used by the perpetrators.
In relation to traffic, there has been a 38% reduction in road fatalities for January this year in comparison to January last year, with 8 fatalities this year and 13 last year. January 2012 has also seen significant reductions in relation to the other categories of traffic accidents – serious, minor and damage.
So far pedal cyclists is the main category of road users affected, with five such persons having lost their lives on the roads during January this year. Speeding has been listed as a major contributing factor to fatal accidents.
Meanwhile, the force says it is continuing its enforcement activities along with the use of breathalysers and radar guns and traffic education, and at the end of January this year a total of 6, 720 cases were made against errant motorists. Of this total, some 1, 229 cases were for speeding. Also there has been a 21 % decrease in serious accidents and a 29% decrease in minor accidents. For 2011, there were 33 serious accidents as compared to 26 for this year and 52 minor accidents for last year as compared to 37 for this year with 83 damage accidents last year and 66 for this year.
‘A’ Division recorded the highest number of road fatality so far for this year with four accidents resulting in four deaths. ‘B’ and ‘C’ Division came in with three accidents each resulting in three deaths.
‘D’ Division recorded two accidents with two deaths while E&F Division recorded one accident with one death.
