Hundreds flocked City Hall and the Brickdam Cathedral yesterday to pay their
last respects to Georgetown’s Deputy Mayor, Robert Williams, who died last week at the Caribbean Heart Institute, Georgetown Hospital.
Roberts, 62, was hailed as someone of integrity, a son of the soil who dedicated his life to serving the people of this country.
Acting Deputy Mayor, Patricia Chase-Green described Williams as a person who could never say no to anyone. “He would always spread his wings wide ….just to render help to someone in need.” She said that he dedicated his life to the people who loved him.
President Donald Ramotar described Williams as someone who was interested in the security of the people of this country. He said Williams’ love and dedication allowed him to move up in his political life.
As a former Minister of the government, Williams served this city and he worked very hard trying to enhance our city, Ramotar said.
He was one of the persons who had been very open and tried to help anybody. Ramotar said that as a Commissioner with the Guyana Elections Commissions, Williams served with distinction. The President described Williams as fair and an even-handed person who worked in the interest of all in every sense of the word.
Town Clerk, Yonnette Pluck-Cort, said that a sterling son of the soil must be recognized. Williams demonstrated true leadership qualities and there is no doubt that he would leave a sterling mark on the hearts of all of those who he would have met… he was a mentor to many.
Williams played an instrumental role in the development of the new vendors’ mall, which now accommodates sellers who once occupied pavements on Water Street. He helped to conceptualise and establish the Guyana Association of Municipalities.
He was Mayor from 1987 to 1989 and then Deputy Mayor from 1998. Williams was in charge of several committees at City Hall including Market and Public Health, City Works and Finance Committees.
