All doubts have been removed and it’s now official; the historic boxing card that
pits the skills of several Guyanese nationals and two foreigners for prestigious Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) titles is indeed on and will be staged at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Saturday February 25. All of the boxers have affixed their signatures to their respective contracts and have opened camp around the country.
The contract signing ceremony took place yesterday afternoon at the Avenue of the Republic offices of Abdool and Abdools Insurance Brokers and attracted such pugilists as Edmond DeClou, Dexter Marques and Orland Rogers. DeClou will don gloves against Barbadian Kevin Placide, while Marques and Rogers will face off with each other. The ultimate prize will be the coveted CABOFE middleweight belt, in the case of DeClou while Marques and Rogers will battle for the bantamweight version of that title.
Meanwhile, Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) representative, Howard Cox urged all Guyanese to troop to the venue to enjoy one of the best cards in recent times. He
said that ever since Braithwaite has defeated Vicenzo Cantatore for the World Boxing Council Cruiserweight title, Guyanese have yearned to see him inlive action. Further, he said that Cox has never lost a fight in Guyana and has endeared himself to Guyanese boxing buffs. “Unbelievably, these two fighters have never crossed paths and this meeting could be very historic,” said Mr. Cox.
President of the GBBC, Peter Abdool was just as excited. He said that the card is a true Caribbean mix that presents an enormous opportunity for boxers of member states to represent the region as CABOFE champions in the upcoming World Boxing Council (WBC) Cup Competition in which the eventual champion in each of the identified divisions will cart off an unprecedented US$250,000.
The other fights that make up the February 25 card are: CABOFE bantamweight champion, Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry against Barbadian Selwyn Lett; Barbadian based Guyanese, Revlon Lake against Barbadian, Miguel Antoine; Dexter Marques against Orland Rogers; Edmond DeClou against Kevin Placide and Barbadian, Miguel Antoine up against Revlon Lake
The boxers have since opened camp at their respective gyms in Berbice and Albouystown while the overseas pugilists are at top gyms in their respective countries. The price of admission is $3,000 for ringside and half that amount for the stands. Activities will not be televised live.
