A group of young people, joined by those involved in politics, sports and other
backgrounds braved the rains yesterday to clean up the Georgetown seawalls.
Youths for Guyana (Y4G), a non-governmental organization, organized the activity. An estimated 150 youths, including those from the national football team – the Golden Jaguars – joined in to clean the garbage-strewn beach of Kingston.
Lisa McClean, President of Y4G, highlighted the fact that the group hoped that the activity could raise awareness about the harmful environmental and social impacts of garbage.
She said that it is the very persons who visit the seawalls for leisure that end up dumping their refuse, damaging the environment and setting a bad example for their children. The organization was established to mobilize Guyanese youths to get involved in social activism “towards molding a better future.”
Youths for Guyana was formed following interaction among friends on Facebook, who decided that it was better to stop talking about the various social ills in society and actually work towards change.
