Based on recommendation made by the Ministry of Home Affairs to the Cabinet of Ministers, approval has been given for the introduction of a $6000 marriage license fee.
This announcement was made by Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee, recently during a media briefing.
According to the Minister, there are three categories under which couples desirous of getting married are placed. These include a citizen of Guyana getting married to another citizen; a foreigner to a non-resident and a citizen to a non-resident. For each of these categories, the couples will be charged a fee of $6000.
Rohee in explaining the decision said that in the past, there was no cost attached as the government was forced to subsidize the process.
However, there are a number of costs attached to getting marriage license which include administrative costs as well as printing, amongst others.
Then there are instances where persons misplace their certificates and would make applications for a replacement.
