Back in 2009 Winston George successfully underwent a kidney transplant and has
been doing well ever since until December of last year.
George who visited this publication recently is now in urgent need of a surgery to remove a brain tumor which was discovered by a doctor in December. Doctors who have been seeing George at both the Balwant Singh and the Georgetown Public Hospitals believe that the tumor developed as a result of some of the medication he has been on ever since the surgery.
According to documents seen by this publication, back in July of last year George started to experience numbness in his right side, including his leg, arm and face. This was compound with severe headaches and distorted vision in his right eye. After several tests and a CT scan, doctors had an indication that George had a tumor. George was advised to ease his medication as the team which operated on him for the kidney transplant, were expected back in Guyana.
In December the team arrived and an MRI was done confirming that there was a tumor in George’s brain. This new condition has rendered George incapable of working as he has been on and off at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
George has been recommended for a much needed surgery to remove the tumour. However that can only be done at a hospital in Indian. Given his prolonged illness and being hospitalized regularly, his family is now seeking the public’s assistance.
The cost for the surgery is US$6,500 and the Ministry of Health and the National Insurance Scheme have both pledged to assist.
However, George and his wife, Loraine, are asking for donations which will go towards accommodation and air fares. Already, George said, he has received tremendous support from the Georgetown Public Hospital, the Ministry of Health, NIS, and Balwant Singh Hospital.
In the meantime, George and his family are pleading with members of the public for their assistance so that he can reclaim his life. Persons interested in assisting the family can make contact on telephone numbers 218-3810, 644-3206 or deposits can be made at Scotia Bank account number 1007553.
Back in 2009, George, an army officer, was forced to retire because of his ailing kidney condition. He however had a successful surgery as his daughter Melissa donated a kidney.
