Executive Director of Food for the Poor (FFP), Leon Davis, has urged the Guyana Police Force (GPF)
not to hesitate to approach the organization for assistance, “since the more you come to us, it is better for us because we will try and help out”.
He was over the weekend addressing the new police officers at the graduation ceremony at the Felix Austin Police College (FAPC) at Adventure on the Corentyne.
“We at Food for the Poor, whatever we say we will do, we will do it, even if it takes time, we will have it done,” he noted. “It is for you people to come to us, because we have this whole country to take care of.”
The organization has several ongoing projects at the college including tiling of the floors in the kitchen and mess halls. Food for the Poor has also donated several beds to the college.
Davis said that he did not like the conditions in which the trainees were living under in the barrack rooms “and we have changed that”.
“When I visited the kitchen… it was not to my expectation…on the spot I made a decision that we will be bringing in an industrial stove for baking purposes,” he revealed. The stove is on its way from Miami and would assist the large scale cooking and baking. There are some extension works on the kitchen and a number of other projects.
He added that FFP “has a very soft spot in our hearts for the police, and it is a tremendous job”. “Sometimes when you read the newspapers, I feel sorry for the police because not the whole force is bad.”
He urged the relevant authorities to place more attention on the living conditions of police at the various stations on the outskirts of the country. FFTP has already inspected the Whim Police Station and the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam to explore possible assistance also.
FFTP is involved in a number of relief, and charitable projects in Guyana and several other countries in the region.
