The Criminal Session of the Berbice High Court is expected to open today with the traditional march and inspection of the ranks in front of the Berbice High Court at Esplanade Road, New Amsterdam.
A contingent of female ranks in the division is expected to make up the parade.
Some 31 persons, including an alarming 20 for murder, are awaiting trial, according to Assistant Superintendent of Prisons, Evelyn Crandon, who made the disclosure as she presented the jail delivery before the closure of the October Criminal Session at the New Amsterdam High Court. Of the 31 persons awaiting trial, there is one female who is awaiting trial for unlawful and malicious wounding. Several persons have been awaiting trial since 2006.
In addition to the 20 persons awaiting trial for murder, four are accused in sex penetration, two for carnal knowledge and two for armed robbery. Another person will face trial for buggery while one person who escaped from lawful custody will have his day in court.
