Police officials are investigating an incident in which an individual who is well known to lawmen was allowed to remove his impounded vehicle from the Brickdam Police Station.
The vehicle, a Toyota Carina 212, PMM 4242, was driven out of the Brickdam Station compound at around 02:00 hrs yesterday.
Kaieteur News understands that the police rank who was stationed at the gate was removed from the location to allow the vehicle to pass. The gates were reportedly also left open.
Officials are said to have questioned a Corporal who was in charge of the shift and another rank who was on security detail at the main gate.
“We have at least two police ranks under close arrest and we are looking for the owner of the car,” a senior police official said.
However, other reports indicate that the ranks are still on duty.
The official confirmed that the traffic ranks towed in the vehicle to the Brickdam compound at around 01:30 hrs yesterday after noticing that it was illegally parked in front of a popular Main Street night club.
The vehicle was then parked near to the Traffic office.
It is alleged that shortly after, a police rank from the station, accompanied by the vehicle owner, approached a female traffic rank and ordered her to allow the owner to leave with his car.
When the traffic rank refused, the police rank reportedly had the gate security removed from the location.
The owner then entered his car and drove out of the station before the female traffic rank was aware of what had transpired.
