Staff at the Malaria Clinic, located at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH)
seemed to be overwhelmed with the number of persons who have been visiting the facility recently for malaria treatment.
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease of humans and other animals. The disease results from the multiplication of Plasmodium (a sort of bloodsucking) parasites within red blood cells, causing symptoms that typically include fever and headache in severe cases, progressing to coma or death.
Several patients have complained that whenever they visit the clinic for treatment, they have to wait for several hours.
According to a Kuru-Kuru woman, she brought her son to the clinic to get tested for malaria since 8:00 hrs one morning and up to 13:00 hours her son did not receive any treatment or “see a doctor.”
A West Bank Demerara patient, Timal Rajkumar, told this publication that he visited the centre a few times and he observed that persons have to wait a long time for results.
When Kaieteur News visited the clinic, it was vivid that only two persons were directly attending to patients; one was taking information and the other was taking smears. So basically, it was over 200 persons against the two workers at the centre.
A few persons raised the point that the centre needs more staff; only then everything will be up to date.
A source told Kaieteur News that sometimes over 500 persons would visit the clinic-in one day to get tested.
This publication observed that most persons who visited the clinic are from Port Kaituma, Region One.
Persons are now asking if malaria medicine can be distributed to various clinics in the Regions to avoid the “early morning line” at the GPHC.
When Kaieteur News contacted the doctor-in-charge of the centre for a comment, he refused to speak until permission was given by the Minister of Health, Bheri Ramsaran. Ramsaran, however, when contacted, requested this publication to send an email to the doctor- which was done, but there were no response.
