GT&T T10 Softball Cricket – Female…New champs to be crowned this year

When the 2012 edition of the GT&T T10 Nationwide Softball cricket competition bowls off, new female champions will be crowned since last year’s winner – Berbice All Stars – no longer exists.
Many of the players that made up that winning combination have gone back to their original club, Rose Hall Town Metro which will be fielding a team this year. The remaining players with a few new faces will now be competing as Karibee Strikers.
Kaieteur Sport understands that the Ancient County will be fielding more than a dozen female teams; the GT&T T10 fever has been catching on at lightning speed in all the villages and Guyana.
Manager of the Berbice All Stars, Ms. Abena Schultz who is now at the helm of the Karibee Strikers took time out from their busy preparation schedule to update this Newspaper on their progress to date.
Shultz said she was very confident that they will go all the way to win this year’s edition and she is challenging more female teams to register so that the prize monies for the female segment of the competition can be doubled this year.
Under Captain Melanie Henry, Karibee Strikers have on roster 18 players who are committed and training with a purpose for achieving great things.
When asked if the team has the ability to put away opposing teams given the fact that a number of their strong players will not be around, including West Indies player Shemaine Campbelle who is on contract with the WICB, Shultz stated emphatically, “This is a new year and new things can happen with the new and promising players we have on board,”
The team practices at the Corriverton Community Centre Ground and also at the Leeds Ground, #50 Village on the Corentyne.
Some of the other players on the team are Tenesha Cort, Sherica Campbelle (cousin of Shemaine), Alicia Jones and Onika Tello among others.
Shultz was high in praise for GT&T and the Organising team for putting together such a competition which she believes will to impact positively on the development of sports and females.
“GT&T is doing a wonderful job by having a female version of this tournament. It gives our ladies the opportunity to showcase their talent as well and be on the big stage. It brings out communities and empowers our young ladies in a positive way. I personally would like to thank GT&T and all the other sponsors for their investment.”
Community support in the Ancient County has been excellent and Schultz is confident that that trend will continue and even improve.
This year’s tournament which will start on February 18; registration concluding on February 11 is expected to be bigger and more competitive than in the previous two years. Registration forms are available in the colourful GT&T T10 cricket Magazine which are on sale at al GT&T Commercial Offices and selected dealers for $1000.
