Twenty- five young police recruits were added to the Guyana Police Force on Friday
after they graduated from Course 25-B at the Felix Austin Police College (FAPC) at Adventure on the Corentyne.
On March 7, 2011, 30 young men from across the country commenced their initial training at the college. Twenty- seven finished the course, while the three others opted out.
The ranks concentrated on foot drills and weapon training after which they began their classroom phase, where they were engaged in theoretic and practical sessions in crime and traffic.
They also attended the University of Guyana, Berbice Campus (UGBC) for one week where they were exposed to basic computer training, written and oral communication as well as problem-solving skills.
Ms Yonnett Stephen, Inspector Administrator and Classroom Instructor of the College charged the young men to keep the flag of the Force flying high.
According to Stephens, the ranks joined their counterparts in Georgetown to participate in the Force’s annual Drill Competition in October, where they performed outstandingly.
They also completed their weapon training and live-firing exercises at the Timehri Rifle Ranges.
The ranks were deployed throughout the ‘B’ Division also during the General Elections.
Stephens said that the ranks were also exposed to training in Human Rights, Domestic Violence, Public Order and Riot Drills among other things.
Commander of ‘B’ Division, Derrick Josiah, in his address to the ranks, urged the officers “to be civil to members of the public and be true servants; one who will walk worthy of his calling on professionalism and integrity.”
“You are bestowed with power and authority which should never be abused,” he cautioned.
Josiah noted that the newly trained ranks will be faced with many distractions and temptations but implored them to “remain strong and focused”.
The Commander urged them “to seek to gain knowledge every day and not to be afraid to ask questions or seek advice from their superiors”.
“Develop an appetite for reading and continue to study…get yourself acquainted with every new piece of legislation and prepare to work hard and for long hours as we provide quality service to the members of the public,” he told them.
Josiah told the new policemen that they are a part of “an organization with a rich history, therefore it behoves you to ensure your conduct is all times, exemplary and the image of the Force is never tarnished.”
Chairman of the FAPC Management Committee, honorable Professor Daizal R. Samad of the University of Guyana, Berbice Campus (UGBC) pointed to his campus’s willingness to work with the young recruits for several years now and previous batches.
“We have opened up our space and given our limited resources and our expertise in order that we produce more rounded law enforcement personnel,” he noted.
The UGBC Director noted that not enough attention is being paid to police training.
“Police training should be a primary preoccupation of those in decision making. Criminal elements fear a well equipped Force, but they dread an educated Police Force,” he noted.
The best Graduating Student was Constable Narine.
