Residents from Plaisance and Industry communities yesterday staged a protest over
what they allege is the unjust move of the Central Government to raise their taxes.
According to one resident Joseph Benjamin, of Plaisance there are a number of issues which were affecting the two communities and it has reached “boiling point”.
Benjamin yesterday told Kaieteur News that Central Government is now demanding that residents pay an extra $1000 for garbage disposal. Benjamin say residents find it rather unreasonable since according to them, there is no need for the garbage to be taken to Eccles landfill since the one closer to them can be utilized for another five years.
He said that residents were told if they do not adhere to the decision the monies would have to be included in their rates and taxes. Benjamin also noted that residents were upset that a certain official within the Ministry of Finance has instructed the NDC to inform them that they need to pay the additional monies being asked for.
“Why is it we have to pay additional taxes…when the people at Pradoville 2 get tax exemptions?” Benjamin said. Benjamin also noted that another vexing issue was the fact that structures are being erected on a church burial ground at Plaisance. According to him the burial ground is very sacred.
