– expresses concern over EBB Road
A Partnership of National Unity (APNU) Regional Councilor Mr. Hazrat Hussain of Region 6 and his APNU counterparts on the Region 6 Democratic Council have appealed to Central Government to conduct urgent repairs to the deplorable East Bank Berbice public road.
“The present state of the road is impassable and as a result of this, school children and working adults are sometimes left stranded and these children who solely depend on hire cars are reaching school very late which is causing them to miss out instructional period in the morning”, Hussain told Kaieteur News.
“Vehicle owners are complaining of the high cost of maintenance of their vehicles. APNU is cognizant of the fact that the Government has spent millions of dollars on a yearly basis to maintain the road but this does not materialize since it does not last long after construction due to substandard work along with poor materials. APNU is therefore appealing to the Central Government to include this road as a priority in this year’s budget for a complete rehabilitation”, he added.
He said that APNU is also calling on the Regional Administration of Region 6, the National Drainage and Irrigation Board (NDIA) and the Ministry of Public Works to launch an investigation into work executed on the Revetment at Lonsdale Village on the East Bank of Berbice by Resat Constructing firm on the West Coast of Berbice.
“Lack of supervision by Regional Engineers, work not done to specification and substandard materials are contributing factors that led to the collapse of the multi- million revetment. Also, the copy of the Bill of Quantity and specification were not given to anyone in the community nor NDC/ CDC (Neighbourhood Democratic Council/Community Development Council) to supervise the work. Dirt that was dug from the area to be used is unsuitable. APNU is therefore calling for a comprehensive investigation to make its findings public and those found culpable should face the full force of the law”, the councilor added.
The new Regional Administration under Mr. David Armogan has pledged to stamp out all forms of corruption in the region.
