University of Guyana academic Dr. Patsy Francis has reportedly mended fences with Council Member Indra Chandarpaul.
This follows a letter she received from Vice Chancellor Lawrence Carrington, urging her to apologize for her actions during last Tuesday’s confrontation at the university, following a protest.
The woman yesterday told Kaieteur News that she doesn’t get the impression that she had abused anyone.
According to Dr.Francis she had spoken to Chandarpaul, the morning after the incident and asked if she had felt threatened.
Kaieteur News was told that Chandarpaul answered in the negative. Francis said she further went on to re-assure Chandarpaul that there was no intention of harming her.
Dr.Francis explained that of all the persons, Chandarpaul has always been a friend of the University, but “it’s just that as it is right now she’s a part of the Council which has taken certain actions” which they do not support.
In terms of the sit-in, Dr.Francis said that it would officially start on Tuesday. She explained that they needed to give the University 72 hours notice. Dr Francis further told Kaieteur News that they have received full support for their actions so far.
She explained that the sit in, students and lecturers would be in the classrooms but no teaching would be done.
“We want students to be on campus and we want them to be a part of the process, and all of the lecturers on campus are supporting the protest,” she noted.
She explained that the committee is prepared to meet with the Council to address the matter in order to end the protest action.
On Tuesday the main lecture theaters of the university were padlocked as students turned up for classes.
On Monday, the committee met and decided that they would be closing down the University until the demands of staff and students are met.
