The Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym of New Amsterdam Berbice will be looking to continue their good showing in the Boxing arena when the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) stages a two-day box-off at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, today and tomorrow.
The Gym will be sending seven fighters to the activity which will be used to identify and select potential candidates in the different weight classes, divisions and age groups to represent Guyana in upcoming regional and international tournaments including the Olympics Games during the year.
The boxers are Olympic games hopeful Richard Williamson, who will be fighting in the flyweight division, his two brothers, Joel Williamson, Jamal Eastman and the other representatives will all be fighting in the U15 division, namely the Phillips brothers Nicholas and Nicosey, Keon Williams, Shaquel Simon and the lone female Rena David who will be competing as a Bantamweight.
According to coach Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers the boxers have all be training very intensely and are rearing to go. He expects all of them to come out victorious. Richard Williamson has been selected as a possible candidate to the Olympic Games later this year, while his brothers Joel Williamson and Jamal Eastman just a week ago won their fights in the latest edition of the monthly Friday night fights. Joel by knockout in 35 seconds, while Jamal won by unanimous decision. They are the nephews of Former three times world boxing title challenger Howard ‘The Battersea Bomber’ Eastman. Richard Williamson and David represented Guyana last year in Barbados. Williamson who won nine out of twelve fights during 2011 returned with a silver medal.
The action will commence at 18:00h on both days. Boxers from the others Berbice Gyms: Rose Hall Jammers, Central New Amsterdam and Tiger Eye are also expected to participate. Over 50 pugilists are expected to compete.
Meanwhile, Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers has commenced training for his upcoming WBC/CABOFE Flyweight title match against Dexter Marques which is scheduled for Friday 24th of February at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH). Rogers is being taken through his paces by Former Guyana Light Heavyweight Boxing champ Al Thomas with assistance from and former Amateur Boxing Champion Monty Bovell.
Rogers and the boxers are going through their paces at the Gym Headquarters at the People’s National Congress Berbice Headquarters at Strand and St Magdalene Streets in New Amsterdam.
Rogers also took the opportunity to express thanks to President of GABA Steve Ninvalle for the donation of some much needed gear including Gloves, head guard and a pair of sneakers.
