The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) is the place to be this evening when the executives of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) stages a special tournament to assess the progress of those pugilists preparing for international assignments over the coming year. Activities will culminate on Saturday.
The tournament was initially slated for the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue but has been shifted after negotiations between GABA officials and those of the National Sports Commission (NSC) proved successful.
The cream of the country’s amateur boxers, representing gyms across the country will be on show and boxing buffs could expect punches from gong to gong. Activities will be intense since the boxers will be under the spotlight for selection at several imminent international tournaments.
GABA’s Tournament Director, Terrence Poole intimated that executives have decided to plan a tournament of this nature in order to evaluate the progress of those pugilists shortlisted for imminent overseas engagements. This ploy will ensure that those boxers shortlisted for participation in those tournaments are the best available.
Fans could expect to see Guyana’s identified representatives at the 2012 London Olympics, Imran ‘Magic’ Khan and Richard Williamson of the Harpy Eagles and Pocket Rocket Boxing Gyms respectively, in action.
The former boxer has recovered sufficiently from a recent injury incurred during an out of ring fracas and is expected to turn in his usual top of the line performance. Several overseas based Guyanese pugilists will also be in action including United States of America based Lawrence Singh. He has recently lost to Khan in a specially arranged tournament in Trinidad and Tobago and arrived in Guyana yesterday for tonight’s show. However, a return clash with Khan has been ruled out since Singh will be competing in a lighter weight category. Several other overseas based boxers are also expected to participate in the tournament.
Additionally, local boxers in all of the categories will be showcasing their talent in the hope of impressing the selectors. These include Burt Braithwaite, Eon Bancroft, Laured Stewart, Devon Gouveia, Dexter Wray, and a host of others. Among the gyms vying for honours are Guyana Defense Force (GDF), Rose Hall Jammers, Ricola Warriors, Forgotten Youth Foundation and Five Star among others.
Boxers are asked to assemble at the National Gymnasium for the weigh this morning while the action gets underway tonight at 18:00hrs sharp. Patrons are asked to support the event.
