Mark Jeffery, 32, of No 53 Village, Corentyne, Berbice is a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital, nursing several chop wounds about his body.
The man, a father of one, and a vendor in Pitt Street, New Amsterdam is lucky to be alive having received chops on his left foot, head, left shoulder and back
He also narrowly escaped having a fork plunged into his stomach by a warring neighbour and his son with whom he has an ongoing disagreement.
Speaking to Kaieteur News from his hospital bed, Jeffery stated that he was at home sometime around 15:30 and 16:00 hrs yesterday and was just about to step out of the house when he noticed his neighbour, Desmond Douglas armed with three cutlasses and a fork looking at him. Before Jeffrey could realise what was about to happen, the man had already scaled the fence and was upon him.
Douglas, a canecutter, first chopped Jeffrey across his left leg, almost severing it.
Jeffery said he fell and upon looking up he saw the man about to plunge the fork into his stomach. He just managed to move aside as the fork sunk into the ground.
The attacker, using expletives while threatening to kill Jeffrey, chopped him across his shoulder twice in what was an attempt to sever the victim’s neck.
Not satisfied, the attacker then chopped Jeffrey three times across his head, before he managed to grab the cutlass, thus cutting two of his fingers.
Realising that Jeffery was badly wounded and completely covered with blood, Douglas hastily returned to his yard.
But his son Travis went over to Jeffrey who was lying on the ground with the intention of “finishing me off”.
The young man chopped Jeffrey across his back.
By then neighbours had gathered and the son made good his escape.
Jeffrey was picked up by neighbours and rushed to the Skeldon Hospital before being transferred to the New Amsterdam hospital, where he remains a patient.
Douglas, who is well known to the authorities, was subsequently arrested.
Jeffery stated that his neighbour and his family are always at war with him and this confrontation escalated two weeks ago when Jeffrey reported the theft of a laptop computer.
Douglas was one of the suspects and he was arrested. Jeffery stated that they had been before the court already and was placed on a bond. Investigations continue and charges are likely to be instituted soon.
