Government, in boosting the tourism sector, is set to launch a special package under the theme “Festival of Colours” from March 2 – 9, 2012, which will coincide with the annual Holi/Phagwah festival.
Tourism officials revealed that the aim of the project is to get Guyanese living abroad to come home for the week and “rediscover their homeland”. This is one of the many series of tourism packages aimed at the Diaspora.
“We are targeting overseas-based Guyanese directly, to come home, to rediscover and enjoy the cultural activities in their home.”
The partners in the project include the government, Trinidad & Tobago’s national carrier, Caribbean Airlines, and local hotels. Together they will offer a package that includes airfare and hotel accommodation.
Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority, Indranauth Haralsingh, said they targeted March because of the lull in visitors during that period, which coincides with the week-long Hindu festivity.
“An activity of this nature will aid the tourism sector’s objective of surpassing the tourist arrival figure of 2011,” he suggested
President Donald Ramotar on Saturday evening at the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana’s annual awards ceremony and dinner at the Princess Hotel, Providence, opined that the country has the potential to become the Caribbean’s number one tourist destination as there are possibilities for eco-tourism, yachting, and wildlife, along with a number of other tourism activities.
“Government is going to strongly support this industry, as this is linked with the development of other sectors…many Guyanese have migrated without the opportunity to experience all of its beauties…these would be one of our target markets.”
The Head of State said there are some impediments that pose a threat to the development of a thriving tourism sector, nevertheless government will step up to the challenge and coordinate with other stakeholders to have these impediments resolved on a sustainable basis.
“Government will inject the needed finances to clean up the city, as the garbage situation poses a threat to the promotion of our tourism industry, but we will have to find a permanent solution by involving stakeholders to ensure the city maintains a standard. The objective is to have Georgetown return to the standard which it once had of being the Garden City.”
