The Guyana Cricket Board has noted with extreme concern the widespread and deliberate confusion that is currently enveloping the state of the game in Guyana and would like to reiterate our position on some very important issues whilst calling on the Government to desist from these amateur maneuvers, which only serve to bring the game into disrepute and is most detrimental.
The GCB is the SOLE recognized authority and agent for the game of cricket in Guyana. Our parent body, the West Indies Cricket Board, has continued to belabor this point to say the least in all of its engagements with the various stakeholders and by extension, we are subject to and governed by the rules and regulations of the Governing body for the sport of cricket worldwide, the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Already, we are at the end of January and continue to lose valuable time and resources that could be better earmarked for our developmental programmes. Our Secondary schools’ competition, which was to be launched on January 11th 2012; the WICB‘s Kiddys and Grassroots development programs; our Professional League and National coaching programme, which is set to see the return of current National and West Indies players to the coaching ranks in our primary and secondary schools, have all been languishing due to the current situation caused by the Government lockout of our administrators and staff.
All of the national competitions have been placed on hold, including the Inter-county competitions.
Our preparations for the recent CT20 cup, which had included two practice matches against eventual finalists Jamaica and further encampment, were severely hampered. The Government of Guyana action had forced the eventual abandonment of all our plans and may have served the Trinidad & Tobago cause well. Once again, in the lead up to an important Regional tournament, our National team members have been placed under tremendous duress with conflicting information being peddled by representatives of WIPA/WIPMACOL. We strongly condemn such actions and would humbly request that the Government take immediate steps to curb and/or control the actions of its agents.
The GCB remains committed to the development of cricket in Guyana and the region and will continue to execute our duties professionally despite these challenging circumstances with the lockout from our Offices and over thirty million dollars worth of cricket related equipment and apparel unavailable to us towards the smooth and efficient execution of our duties.
We have been forced to divert very scarce and valuable financial resources on lawyers’ fees which could have been better spent on cricket related matters but have continued to meet our obligations to our players and staff. Our operational focus has been on ensuring our players ply their chosen trade and be allowed to showcase their undoubted talent to the world; this has seen us climb seemingly insurmountable barriers and we remain grateful to our parent body, the WICB, in this regard.
It is most unfortunate that the continuous threats by the Government regarding the withdrawal of the Guyana National Stadium for cricket use has played a significant factor is us losing our home advantage in the first few rounds of the Regional 4 day tournament and now threatens the much anticipated West Indies v Australia test match. Indeed, all future tour bids now by Guyana as a host venue will be viewed with much skepticism and mistrust.
In closing, the GCB would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who continue to support our cricket, both publicly and in private and to urge our team members to remain focused on the games at hand and extend our best wishes for greater success in their pursuit of Regional honors at the longer version of the game.
