Gold Miners Association, GGMC to promote environmentally friendly practices
Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) would be collaborating with the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) in establishing a formal training programme focusing on environmentally friendly mining practices and appropriate technology to explore mines and recover gold and other precious minerals.

This disclosure was made by the President of GGDMA, Patrick Harding, while delivering remarks at the recent launching of the Guyana Women Miners Association. The function was held at the Sea Breeze Hotel, Kitty.
Harding related GGDMA membership includes small, medium and large scale miners. Since the body’s establishment in 1982 its achievements have benefited all miners. The association members account for over 90 percent of the gold that goes to the Guyana Gold Board and also over 90 percent of investments and capitalization of the industry, he added.
“This association shows how members working together with confidence and support of the members can lead the industry successfully. It is agreed that there are many outstanding issues that face this industry and together we are prepared to be associated with the Guyana Women Miners Association in the best interest of moving this industry forward,” Harding stated.
He emphasized that women have played a pivotal role in mining- they have partnered with males and contributed significantly to the industry’s successes. He challenged the women who are now entering the sector to cooperate to play a meaningful role in the industry’s development.
Harding pointed out that the Guyana Women Miners Association is launched at a time when the price of gold is very attractive. This has attracted males and females from every Region. He noted that GGDMA welcomes new entrants but challenges them to mine and observe environmentally friendly practices. They are also asked to ensure that the gold produced is sold to the Guyana Gold Board or other licensed buyers.
Harding related the industry is faced with many challenges including the re-organization of the GGMC, repairs and maintenance of interior roads, increases in crime, violence and other illegal activities in the mining industry, and illegal mining both by Guyanese and non-nationals.
