The past students of Berbice High School and old nemesis Berbice Educational Institute took to the football field and played to a hard fought 2-2 draw in damp and slippery conditions, but in the end it was BHS who were declared winners and secured the first lien on the Raj Mangal trophy.
The two teams battled recently at the All Saints Scott Church Ground in New Amsterdam and as is usual when they clash, even if it is a match for past of present day players, the games are always closely fought and keenly contested.
BHS were out running when Xavier Fraser netted in the 15th minute through an Adrian Bess pass. BHS made it 2-0 with Raul Caesar scoring in the 25th minute with assistance from former national Philip Carrington.
BEI were not to be outdone with Devon James pulling one back in the 35th minute when he received a onetime pass from Horace Roach to score from close up. The score remained unchanged at half time.
On the resumption, both teams continued to press forward with impressive play with BHS looking to press home their advantage and BEI looking for the equalizer. But it was BEI that found the back of the net in the 70th minute through the persistent Roach as he beat the BHS custodian with a well placed shot to level the score at 2-2. From then on it was a battle of wits and tactics. The game see sawed as both teams pressed for the winning goal, but none came.
In the end BHS, who won an inaugural match last year and came into the match as defending champions, were presented with the trophy, which will now be called the Raj Mangal Memorial Trophy.
Other individual prizes were: Best Goalkeeper Rodwell Liddell (BEI), Best Defender Edward Carr (BEI), Best Midfielder Philip Carrington (BHS) and Best Forward Horace Roach (BEI) while the Most Valuable Player accolade went to Adrian Bess of (BHS).
Mangal was a former Educationist and a former Head Master of BEI and Principal of the Cyril Potter Education Secondary Department in Berbice. The cricket match was not played due to the inclement weather.
Coordinators of the event were overseas based former BEI students and former national junior players Owen “Piggy” Humphrey and Robert “Buntin” Carrington. They have committed to making the game an annual affair and to assist football, footballers, sports and youths back home in whatever way possible.
