Residents of Wakenaam are blaming the authorities for this slippage that occurred at the Maria’s Pleasure koker. They say that negligence is the cause.
There are many sections of the seawall in Wakenaam where the water has undermined the concrete structure. This Maria’s Pleasure koker is just one of them.
After the wall slipped, no serious attention was paid as the Wakenaam Neighbourhood Democratic Council tried to get an excavator presented to the people of Wakenaam to assist with drainage. The persons responsible for the excavator refused. They claimed that the machine was to be used for National Drainage and Irrigation Authorities activities. The koker is the responsibility of the Wakenaam NDC.
The NDC placed sand bags on the top of the river bank to prevent the water over flowing to the land across the road.
When the tide came in the weight broke the bank taking the sand bags with it.
Chairman Zakir Khan of the Wakenaam NDC told this publication that the situation is beyond the ability of the NDC.
Two weeks ago an engineer of the sea defence at Wakenaam said that he was waiting on some materials to make pilings.
Meanwhile, the current high tides continue to batter the walls of the remaining structure. Residents are calling on the authorities to awake to the reality of the potential damage that exists.
