Today Kuice Sharma Soloman at the tender age of 32 ought to be a very proud young man
having achieved a position that most of his peers could only dream about.
On Wednesday last, Soloman was elected Chairman of Region Ten, but instead of being proud, this youth said that he was ‘humbled’. And looking at his unassuming demeanor, and very approachable manner, it is easy to see that humility.
But Soloman, with all his humility, has promised to fight tenaciously for the development of Region Ten.
Currently the Vice President of the Upper Demerara Football Association and a logging entrepreneur Soloman was elected unopposed as Regional Chairman at the seventh council of the Regional Democratic Council. There were no other nominees for the position. He is the youngest to hold the prestigious position.
Soloman was catapulted into the political arena last year after he was elected as APNU’s campaign manager for Region Ten, prior to the recent national elections.
But before all that, the new and youthful Chairman was known mostly for his involvement in sports, especially football.
Soloman says football is his passion and as such he has always lobbied for the uplift of the sport both regionally and nationally. He even played the game while in High School (MHS) and made the National team.
Background
Kuice Sharma Soloman is a born Lindener. He is the second of three boys for his mother. Gem Soloman. His only regret, he says, is that his father did not live to see him attain his new office. He is convinced that the elder Soloman would have been a very proud man.
Soloman credits his achievements to his parents, who he says were always very supportive of his endeavours.
He received his early education at the Regma Primary, Mackenzie Primary and Mackenzie High School respectively and later attended the University of Guyana where he read for a Diploma in Geology.
Soloman subsequently landed his first job with GNIC where he supervised the drilling of wells across the country.
That job allowed him to really see Guyana, and to appreciate the beautiful country and learn the different cultures of the people.
He said that he also gained significant experience from his tenure with the Linden Municipality, where he served in the capacity of a councilor with the Interim Management Committee.
Soloman is a devout Muslim, and has been so since the tender age of twelve. The Regional Chairman proudly asserts that he is a social activist- one who works tirelessly for the betterment of his fellow man.
His hobbies include writing, poetry, “lots of reading” and, of course, football.
Soloman said that he sees and uses sports as a vehicle to bring about awareness of social issues and effect change.
In reference to his recent election, Soloman declared, “It is by the will of God, and only by the will of God!”
In his inaugural speech in the RDC Boardroom where he was elected Regional Chairman on Wednesday Solomon declared, “This day would not have been possible without the unyielding support of my mother, Gem Solomon, my brother Quince Solomon, my fiancée Ms. Odetta Jones, former leader of the PNC/R Mr. Robert Corbin, Liaison to Region Ten, Mr. Aubrey Norton, our MPs, all of the APNU Region Ten coordinators, all the APNU supporters, family and friends.
“The people who supported the movement that got me here did not do it just out of excitement, rather it was because they understand that a change in direction is much needed. The challenges ahead will be tall; we are faced with high unemployment, limited production of our own food, a deliberate information restriction being placed on us, a push for improved education standards, Health, recreational facilities, and so much more.
“It’s a long road ahead, the challenges will be many; I am not here to work miracles, it’s a process that will take some time. But I am certain, I am more than hopeful that together all 41 plus thousand residents of this resilient region, will realize our manifest destiny. I promise you that together we will get there.”
Soloman was also high in praise for Leader of the Opposition David Granger, who he referred to as his ‘inspiration’. Granger journeyed to the mining Town especially for his swearing in. (Enid Joaquin)
