-top finishers for NACAC Cross Country in T&T
By Juanita Hooper
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) will host its National Cross Country race today in the National Park at 2:30 pm, following which the outstanding performers will be selected to represent the country at the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Countryrace in Trinidad and Tobago next month.
With the cross country being the first event of the year on the AAG calendar, the distance athletes should be enthusiastic to showcase their talent as they aim for victory in the race against their rivals in their respective categories, which are junior girls 4km, junior boys 6km, senior women 6km and senior men 8km.
Last year cross country on the outer grass circuit of the National Park (usually referred to as the bumps) saw Doretta Wilson of Region Nine, Nathaniel Giddings of Linden, Cleveland Forde and Alika Morgan of the Capital City dominating the four categories.
CARIFTA Games gold medalist, Jevina Straker, who missed the cross country last year due to an injury is expected to be on the podium in the junior category of the race if she competes today. Straker received the AAG ‘Junior Sportswoman of the Year’ award a few weeks ago for her outstanding performances during 2011.
National Schools’ 10km Road Race and 1500m winner, Wilson dominated the junior category in a time of 16:29 last year. Andrea Foster, the daughter of former national sprinter, Alisha Fortune, showed she was a force to be reckoned with after finishing second in her first cross country in 16:45. Foster was a part of the 2011 Inter-Guiana Games (IGG). Abbemi Roberts was third last year in 17:04.5 and missed the IGG.
Today the steam should be between the three juniors, whop were training during the offseason for this prestigious meet where a chance to represent Guyana at an international level is up for grabs.
The ‘Junior Sportsman Runner-up of the Year’, Giddings will be looking to recapture his junior title at the cross country as he continues to make his name in these races. He was also a part of the IGG team in Suriname and copped two medals. Giddings’ main rival last year in the race was Region Nine’s Hezron Pedro, but Pedro lost the race in the last 800m of the 6km distance when Giddings upped his pace and sprinted to victory before an impressive crowd at the Park.
Coming down to the senior category, which most of the showdown happens, Guyana’s little Kenyan, Forde would be looking to retain his status in the annual event. The athlete would be looking to improve on his last year time of 25:58.4 as he proceeds in trying to qualify for the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Dennis Horatio of Police Progressive Youth Club along with Guyana Defence Force’s Wilbert Mingo, Running Brave Athletic Club, Cleveland Thomas and Trinidad and Tobago-based national distance runner, Lionel D’Andrade were the other senior athletes that vied fiercely for a spot on the podium from the start of the whistle last year.
D’Andrade, Thomas and Horatio took an early lead in the race after 2km, but the battle in the race concluded with Forde, Horatio and Mingo with the former turning on the heat around the 7km mark. Forde took a commanding win ahead of Horatio (26:16) and Mingo (26:27).
Morgan also dominated the senior female category (6km) in 23:10 ahead of Guyana Defence Force’s Ashanti Scott (26:46.8).
However, D’Andrade and Kelvin Johnson who are both in excellent form after finishing on the podium in a recent 10km in Suriname and Trinidad respectively will be notably absent from the race today, which will place their selection on the NACAC team in doubt.
