Once again he has underlined his status as the best sprinter in Guyana. Alonzo Greaves
did it in fine style when the 2012 cycling season pedaled off at the inner circuit of the National Park yesterday with the staging of the 19th annual Ricks & Sari Agro Industries 11-race Meet.
Contesting the feature 35-lap school boys & Invitational event, Greaves, like he has done on so many occasions, emerged from the pack easing to the top spot in one of the better finishes in recent times underlining the competitive and strategic nature of the final few laps.
With the year off to such a rollicking start and witnessed by Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) President Cheryl Thompson, the local governing body will do well to ensure that programmes are in place to build and maintain this momentum.
Greaves’ winning time was One Hour 19 Minutes 10 Seconds; he outsmarted Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay, Robin Persaud, Linden’s Mark Lewis, Geron Williams and another Linden based rider, Orville Hinds, in that order.
Mc Kay, Persaud and Hinds took one sprint prize each while the young and promising Rawl Leal captured the other 5 in a very good display, his inexperience and lack of support put paid to his efforts of winning the event outright.
Twenty-seven riders faced starter’s orders and from lap 5, youth took charge with Raynauth Jeffrey and Leal breaking away from the main pack. They consolidated their advantage but as the race matured, the lack of experience and race fitness ended up being their downfall as they were joined on lap 26 by Geron Williams and the Differently Able Walter Grant-Stuart. By lap 27, the main pack with the big guns joined the fray and the rest is now history.
Despite not featuring in the top six, Leal and Jeffrey along with Michael Anthony of Linden who also finished the main event; the younger brigade on show, cycling this year seems destined for big things.
Anthony picked up where he left off last year with victory in the juvenile 10-lap contest. He won from Akeem Arthur and Leal. Richard Charles was the top upright rider on the day, taking the 5 lap event with Mario King and Andre Petty following in that order.
Junior Niles claimed the top position in the veteran’s 5 lap Under-50 showdown, prevailing over Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton and Berbice based Thuran Harris. Monty Parris was first and Morris Fagundes 2nd in the Over-60 match-up.
Results from the other races 1st – 3rd:
12-14 3-laps Romario Samuels; Naomi Singh; Alta Khan
BMX 6-9 2-laps Stephen Smith; Jamal Arthur; Denz Huntley
BMX 9-12 3-laps Shemar Dass; Yusuf Latiff; Deeraj Ghabarran
BMX 12-14 3-laps Adrian Sharma; Cleveland King; Makel Diaz
