Surinamese authorities have captured a Guyanese wanted for the Christmas Eve’s day murder of Berbice
fireman, Delon Collins.
Suriname’s online Daghblad Suriname yesterday said that Sohan Busjit, 23, and another Guyanese, Gray Kempton, were both nabbed from tips received by the police there. Kempton is said to be wanted for armed robbery in Guyana.
The two were reportedly both hiding out in Suriname. They are being held by the Aliens Department on charges of being illegally in Suriname. The newspaper said that Guyanese authorities are to be notified.
Guyanese police issued a wanted bulletin for Busjit on January 9, saying that he is wanted for questioning in relation to robbery and murder committed on Delon Collins on Christmas Eve last year. Busjit’s address was given as Limlair Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
According to accounts of the fireman’s killing, as reported by Kaieteur News, the 29-year-old and his fiancée, Probation and Welfare Officer, Nadine Crawford, 32, and her three children had just returned from shopping in Rose Hall Town. They had just entered Crawford’s yard at Alness, Corentyne, Berbice, when they were confronted by four men with firearms.
Police in a press release stated that the robbers shot Collins in his chest.
When he collapsed, one of the bandits stripped him of the cash he had in his pocket. His fiancée was relieved of her personal jewellery.
Former Divisional Commander Steve Merai had told Kaieteur News that the shooter was positively identified as a known criminal who was recently released from prison.
According to the commander, the man has been sentenced to 18 months in his absence for another armed robbery.
In addition to being wanted for Collins’ murder, Busjit was also sentenced to 18 months in jail for unlawful and maliciously damaging his stepfather’s home at Liverpool Village, Berbice in October last year. However, the wanted man was not in court when Magistrate Fabio Azore found him guilty.
