Double header on this Sunday
“This is the fifth year that NaMilCo will be sponsoring the NaMilCo Football Festival
and I can say with confidence that we have grown over the years and we are very proud of this achievement,” Managing Director Bert Sukhai told a gathering of media operatives, Fruta Conquerors executives and players during the launching of the tournament which was conducted in the Company’s Boardroom yesterday.
Sukhai in his remarks spoke of the significant increase in prize monies over the years, informing that this year has seen the biggest jump since the tournament’s inauguration in 2007.
According to Sukhai, this year’s first prize of $1million has been amplified by 100% when compared with the $500,000 that the winners received at the last tournament, while similar actions have been taken for the other three prizes on offer.
In all, NaMilCo will be investing a whopping $4million with nearly $2million up for grabs in prize monies and trophies which means that the Company has bumped up their investment by 150%.
Sukhai reminded that the Company is one that is extremely careful about its spending since they always look for value for money and our decision to increase the investment so considerably is an indication that there might be bigger things to come providing the support from the teams, the two governing bodies (GFF and GFA), fans and the media.
The Managing Director added that they’ve watched the Fruta Conquerors FC which runs the tournament, grow in terms of development and they’re impressed.
He added that the club has shown admirable accountability always prepared to plough funds accrued from gate receipts back into the further expansion of the club and its facilities.
President of the Fruta Conquerors FC Marlan Cole in his presentation gave an outline of the tournament, disclosing that 15 teams are scheduled to participate with Banks All Stars involvement being on an invitational level.
Cole spoke of the integral role that NaMilCo has played in shaping the tournament into what it has become today and extended thanks on behalf of the club to the major sponsor.
He added that the club has been able to install floodlights and do a number of community and club-based programmes that has ultimately benefitted the players and all this was due to the support of NaMilCo over the years.
Secretary of the club Lavern Fraser-Thomas in her remarks spoke of the Company’s constant demonstration and willingness as a responsible corporate entity to give back to society whether through sports or other social causes.
“Through the support of NaMilCo, we’ve been able to implement a reading programme at the club for our juniors and the hope is that this tournament would be successful enough for us to continue to do that,” Fraser-Thomas pointed out.
She thanked the Company for its unremitting assistance to the club since their initial interaction over five years ago.
The competition kicks off on Sunday with a double header at the Tucville Ground where in the opening encounter Sunburst Camptown goes up against University of Guyana, while the feature match brings together Beacon and Northern Rangers.
Starting time is 18:00 hrs.
